Pensamento do Dia

(Louis Vincent Thomas)

SOLIDARITY ACROSS AFRICA: Zooming in on South Africa

Durban Lesbian and Gay Community and Health Centre( DGLCHC) (a project of the KZN Coalition for Gay & Lesbian Equality) is a Drop-In Centre, safe and secure space for lesbian, transgender, gay, bisexual, and intersex communities in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal.

OUT- LGBT Well Being has been in existence for almost 20 years and is dedicated to the building of healthy and empowered LGBT communities in South Africa and internationally, while reducing heterosexism and homophobia in society.

Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA) is a centre for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) culture and education in Africa. Our mission is, first and foremost, to act as a catalyst for the production, preservation and dissemination of knowledge on the history, culture and contemporary experiences of LGBTI people.

THIS WEEK IN AFRICA

No bail, no trial; 5+ months in Zambian prison on gay charges

Two Zambian men have been jailed for nearly six months without a conviction on homosexuality charges that resulted in their arrest last spring. They are victims of continuing legal delays and the country’s public campaign against homosexuals.

Listening to Pope Francis

I am not Catholic. I am not a believer. And yet, as a South African, I am aware of the positive and negative roles the Catholic Church can play. It was outspoken against apartheid, and its liberation theology (controversial within the church) inspired a generation. In my personal experience, it was a Catholic school in Johannesburg that both defied apartheid’s race quotas and welcomed gay families, including my own.

More loony church pressure for Nigerian gay crackdown

Gay Star News reports a new instance of Nigerian church leaders making ridiculous claims about same-sex marriage as part of a campaign to crack down harder on LGBT people, who already suffer from the nation’s intense homophobia: "An Anglican bishop in Nigeria has appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to sign the ‘Jail all the Gays Bill’ before gay marriage makes the world end."

Africans Protest For Gay Legalization

A panoramic study of African religions will depict Africans as moralistic people – especially the Christianity and the Islamic religion. One of the largest churches in the world can also be found in Africa, and Islamic religion shows a massively interesting in attracting enormous congregations. But this prestige is changing as many Africans are protesting for gay legalization.

When the assailant is one of us

More than half of all rapes are committed by someone known to the victim. A quarter of which are committed by an intimate partner of the victim. Resulting in many unreported rape incidents. The sad thing is that the majority of rapists re-offend within a three year period resulting in an unending circle of rape. Because many people define rape as penetration by a penis, woman-to-woman rape is not acknowledged nor taken seriously. But, it is estimated that one out of three lesbians have been sexually assaulted by another woman.

Things I wish I told you before you came out

You never ‘got in’ so don’t come out and don’t you dare try to justify why you need to be who you are. Fight to be equal instead, it’s imperative that humans understand that you too are human. Beautifully so. Teach them to co-exist, don’t force you existence into their lives, they don’t force theirs onto you. You don’t live for them, but you do live with them.

Zimbabwe’s new police powers provoke fear of more blackmail

The Zimbabwean government has authorised security agencies to have wide-ranging access to personal information about everyone in the country who has a telephone or Internet access, effective Oct. 1. Human rights defenders and legal experts say the new regulations violate Section 57 of the new Zimbabwean constitution, which guarantees citizens the right to privacy. Those with the least power — such as the LGBTI community — fear they will bear the brunt of this change.

Ghana president: Anti-gay anger blocks even talk of change

As in many African countries, intense anti-gay hostility in Ghana creates barriers to even discussing the possibility of fair treatment for LGBT people, especially by politicians. Ghana President John Dramani Mahama made that clear during his recent visit to Georgia at the invitation of Kennesaw State University, which has devoted a year to studying the West African country.

Nigeria: ‘Suspected homosexuals’ charged, plead not guilty

Two young men were arraigned Oct. 1 in Osogbo, Nigeria, on charges of homosexual activity and released on bail pending trial. The “suspected homosexuals,” as they were described in AllAfrica and Africa Spotlight, are the defendants Samuel Friday, 19, and Oni Oluwatobi, 18, who pleaded not guilty.

Angola's Trans UN Ambassador

In a bold move, UNAIDS has gone ahead with a long-mooted plan to make Angola’s transsexual Kuduro star Titica one of its goodwill ambassadors. UNAIDS is no stranger to recruiting popular Angolan figures to help with its in-country awareness campaigns. Angola’s Miss Universe, Leila Lopes, was until recently the face (and body) of a poster campaign, encouraging people to get tested and use condoms. And last year, Nacissela Maurício from the Angolan women’s basketball team, was made the first formal UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador for the country.

TOOLS FOR CHANGE

Resources

ILGA has launched its 2013 issue of the State-Sponsored Homophobia Report which is a world survey of laws on criminalization, protection and recognition of same sex love from its newly opened office in Geneva.

New report on violence based on SOGI in Africa online

Violence against sexual minorities in Africa is rife. Persons belonging to or perceived to be members of the broad grouping ‘lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI)’ are often victim of violence in African states.
